"Oh! My Pa-pa" the song that always makes me cry!

“Oh!  My Pa-pa” – always makes me cry!

I never knew that this beautiful song was actually a German song (“O mein Papa”) as related by a young woman remembering her beloved, once famous clown father.    It was written by Swiss composer Paul Burkhard in 1939 for the musical Der schwarze Hecht.

Eddie Fischer’s recording became number 1 on the USA Billboard Chart in 1954.
Here are the words.
Oh, my Papa, to me he was so wonderful,
Oh, my Papa, to me he was so good.
No one could be so gentle and so lovable,
Oh, my Papa, he always understood.
Oh, my Papa, so funny, so adorable,
Always the clown so funny in his way.
Oh, my Papa, to me he was so wonderful,
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.
Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he'd change my tears to laughter.
If you have never the song, take a minute to listen to Eddie Fischer’s version.  It has recorded by numerous other artists including Jim Nabors for the TV show Gomer Pyle.

Happy Father’s Day (June 19th) to all the pa-pas of today and yesterday!
